Concept of the Space for China
In the recent years, the economic exchanges between China and other countries in the world have almost reached an international level. However, the exchange of Chinese contemporary art has been neglected, since the exchange of economic sphere has been the only focus, though from the perspective of longitude and latitude, as well as a historical meaning, the influence of Chinese culture is visible everywhere in the sphere of world culture.
Beijing Dashanzi Art District, known as Factory 798, is a place where new art takes place. At first, as certain buildings in the factory were available for rent, some Chinese artists began to use them as studios before art more studios, galleries, and cafes fitted in. Currently, a big number of domestic and foreign artists, galleries and designing firms have turned the warehouses and workshops of the factory into their new space through renovation, where art personnel spontaneously gathered around. China’s first contemporary art area was thus launched. Various releases of works and international exchange exhibitions here in the District have attracted people from around the world. Factory 798 represents the opening up in the sphere of art, and signifies the development of Chinese art.
Soon the District is taking a role as the base of promoting art to the world, which, at the same time, will play a positive role to the growth of world contemporary art. The new tide of culture, as vigorous as Factory 798, is also meaningful to us. To enhance the world cultural exchange, and the exchange of contemporary art and cultural between China and the world, we actively participate in and make related plans.
With the opening of more spaces now, i.e. offices, shops, studios and galleries, by enterprise and art studios, a great art district has come into being which has promoted the cultural image of Chaoyang district of Beijing. At the same time, this District is changing every day, every hour, or even every minute. The rich international color and the merge of culture and business of the District are making the District with sustained development potential. The changes like Factory 798 in China have attracted various business opportunities, caught by enterprise, from home and abroad. The root of the rapid growth of the District and the increase of its international publicity lies probably in the hard work of the many artists here in the District. Our activities will follow the direction while bring forth new ideas.
The 798 Art District will bear endless fruits for drawing the cultural events from across the world and continuously promoting new cultural exchange events. The District is also a positive trial in an experimental and advanced way for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
Beijing Cubic Art Center/11-ART.COM is located at the 798 South District of Factory 798, No.4 JiuXianQiao Street, ChaoYang district of Beijing, between the city’s urban districts and Capital International Airport. The South District consists of several Chinese and foreign art galleries, designing firms, architects’ studios and shops. The buildings of the old factory, merged with advanced designing of the spaces, is a new cultural area under spotlight as the choice of foreign media. If
